鯨為適應水中生活，減少阻力，它們的后肢消失，前肢變成劃水的漿板。身體成為流線型，酷似魚。因而它們的潛水能力很強，小型齒鯨可潛至100-300米的水深處，停留4-5分鐘，長須鯨可在水下300-500米處待上1小時，最大的齒鯨--抹香鯨能潛至千米以下，并在水中持續2小時之久。
